Egypt soccer teams played to the end despite clashes that killed scores of fans

The nation’s health ministry said 19 people died in the riots at a match in Cairo on Sunday. State media reported higher numbers.

At least 30 people were killed when police and soccer fans clashed, the Al-Ahram newspaper said, citing medical sources.

The violence occurred at the stadium shortly before the match, but the game between Zamalek and ENPPI teams continued, Al-Ahram said. The teams drew, 1-1.

Authorities later partially lifted the ban by allowing a limited number of fans to attend games, state media reported.
