NY Gov. Cuomo Pushes For Review Of Grand Juries That Fail To Indict Cops

A new initiative by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo could pave the way for the appointment of special prosecutors in cases where police kill unarmed suspects.

In his State of the State address Wednesday, Cuomo said he wants an “independent monitor” to review any grand jury that fails to indict officers in such cases. The New York Post reports that the monitor could recommend that the governor appoint a special prosecutor, thereby circumventing local district attorneys.

Cuomo has spoken openly about appointing special prosecutors to police misconduct cases before. He’s also said that he doesn’t want to limit that oversight to incidents in which the suspect dies.

“So you can beat a person senseless, but if the person doesn’t die than there’s no special prosecutor?” Cuomo said in December. “That doesn’t make sense either.”
