NYPD Officer Indicted In Death Of Akai Gurley, According To Reports

A New York City police officer has been indicted in the shooting death of 28-year-old Akai Gurley, law enforcement sources told both NY1 and The New York Daily News on Tuesday.

A bullet fired by rookie officer Peter Liang killed Gurley inside the darkened stairwell of the Louis Pink housing project in East New York, Brooklyn, on Nov. 20.

“This officer deserves the same due process afforded to anyone involved in the accidental death of another,” Patrick Lynch, president of the city’s largest police union — the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association — said in a statement Tuesday. “The fact the he was assigned to patrol one most dangerous housing projects in New York City must be considered among the circumstances of this tragic accident.”
