In short, a paid leave law helps, but it is not enough. There must also be changes in public awareness and workplace culture. But a national policy would be a step in that direction.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly described the leave given Larisa Casillas. She received one month of paid leave, not zero months. An earlier photo caption with this article misspelled the surname of the woman sho took paid leave from her job at a Los Angeles nonprofit organization. She is Jennie Pasquarella, not Pasquerella.
