Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott Survives Challenge to Leadership

SYDNEY, Australia — Prime Minister Tony Abbott of Australia has fought off a challenge to his leadership after lawmakers from his conservative Liberal Party voted Monday against a motion to declare the party’s top positions vacant.

The government’s chief whip, Philip Ruddock, said 61 lawmakers had voted to oppose the motion, against 39 who wanted to declare the positions vacant. One party member filed an informal vote.
