E.U. Focuses on Belgian State Aid in Tax Avoidance Inquiry

BRUSSELS — The European Union authorities broadened their assault on tax avoidance by multinational companies on Tuesday in opening an investigation into the way Belgium appeared to grant unfair state aid.

The inquiry is part of a wider investigation into whether a string of multinational companies, including Amazon in Luxembourg, Apple in Ireland and Starbucks in the Netherlands, sharply cut their tax bills and broke European Union competition rules.
