Sam Smith won Best New Artist at the Grammys on Sunday. He saved the inspirational words for all the other awards he’s (probably) going to win tonight, using the speech to quickly thank his label, management, mum and dad.

The category received some well-deserved backlash for not including anyone of color. “This year the Grammy Awards promise to be a throwback to that time when Shirley Temple got down in blackface — dumb-stoopid-affected accents and all,” Raquel Cepeda wrote for Rolling Stone in regard to the nominations. And the same year as the whitest Oscars in nearly two decades, no less.
