9 Killed as Train in India Hits Boulder

NEW DELHI — Nine passengers were killed and 10 were seriously injured when a train in southern India derailed Friday morning near Bangalore after hitting a boulder that had rolled onto the tracks, officials said.

Nine cars of the Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity Express train derailed after the train plowed into the boulder, said Anil Kumar Saxena, a spokesman for India’s railways. Suresh Prabhu, the country’s railway minister, posted on Twitter, “Boulder fell on track in Ghat section, train hit it.”
