After Victory at Greek Polls, Leftist Politician Begins Coalition Talks

ATHENS — Alexis Tsipras, the leftist political maverick who swept to power on Sunday in Greece in a popular rebellion, entered talks on Monday morning to form a coalition government that would determine how his Syriza party will start to reverse wrenching austerity policies.

Mr. Tsipras was scheduled to meet with Panos Kammenos, the leader of Independent Greeks, a small right-wing party that has often taken a hard line against austerity and the terms of the Greek bailout and won 4.7 percent of the national vote.

“Democracy will return to Greece,” Mr. Tsipras said to a swarm of journalists as he cast his ballot in Athens. “The message is that our common future in Europe is not the future of austerity.”
