Arrest Warrant Issued for Bangladeshi Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia

DHAKA, Bangladesh — An anticorruption court in Dhaka, the capital, issued an arrest warrant on Wednesday for the opposition leader in Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, in a move that could exacerbate already heightened tensions between her supporters and governing party loyalists.

In addition to Mrs. Zia, warrants were also issued for two other people accused in one of two cases involving embezzlement accusations during her time as prime minister, after all three failed to appear for a hearing. Mrs. Zia’s lawyers have maintained that the charges are politically motivated.

Julfikar Ali Manik reported from Dhaka, and Nida Najar from New Delhi.
