“It would be a surprise with this record, honestly,” Beck told Billboard on the red carpet of the Clive Davis pre-Grammys party on Saturday night (Feb. 7). Although Beck has been nominated twice before for the top album prize at the Grammysin 1997 for Odelay and in 2001 for Midnite Vultureshe believed that Morning Phase would join those two albums in keeping him an album of the year bridesmaid, but never a bride.

Beck, who performed “Heart is a Drum” with Coldplay’s Chris Martin at the Grammys, also confirmed that he is working on the follow-up to Morning Phase, although he does not have a time frame for its release. When asked how far along the full-length is, Beck said with a laugh, “The optimist says about 70 percent [finished] and the realist says about 35.”
