It was last weekend, Tagg and others say, that the former Massachusetts governor came to the conclusion that he was “unlikely” to enter the race, but wanted to sit on it for a bit. Mitt, Ann and the rest of the family all came to the conclusion at the same time that the challenge would be very difficult.
“His statement today is totally honest,” Tagg Romney tells CNN. “He decided he could be the nominee. “The fear was in order to get there it was going to be so hard fought that he could not emerge from a position of strength.”
