U.N. Concerned About Reports That Food Aid to Syria Is in ISIS Hands

GENEVA — The United Nations food relief agency said it was “extremely concerned” about the possible manipulation of its aid to Syria after images posted on jihadist websites and social media appeared to show Islamic State supporters distributing the agency’s relief supplies rebranded with the militant group’s logo.

The images, which came to light at the weekend, show women and children collecting large bags of wheat flour marked with the logo of the World Food Program, bottles of vegetable oil and World Food Program food boxes covered by paper labels bearing the Islamic State insignia.

“We put the pieces together and realized that this probably was whatever was left in the warehouses,” said Abeer Etefa, a spokeswoman for the food agency in Cairo. “In this particular area, no one has access; we have not operated there since September.”
