Yemeni Leader in Limbo Amid Uncertainty His Resignation Will Be Accepted

SANA, Yemen — The fate of Yemen’s president remained unclear on Friday amid reports that the country’s Parliament would meet on Sunday and suggestions that it might reject his resignation.

Houthi militiamen who have besieged the presidential palace all week appeared to be consolidating their control, patrolling the capital in pickup trucks the day after President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi abruptly resigned, along with his prime minister and cabinet.

On Friday, a small protest was held in front of the university in Sana, with demonstrators holding signs reading “No to militias” and renouncing sectarianism. There was no violence and only about 30 people attended.

Mona El-Naggar reported from Sana, Yemen, and Rod Nordland from Amman, Jordan.
