January was a terrible month for stocks

The one exception was 2008, but that was the year of the financial crisis.

“In an effort to note something positive we can say that while the index is down 2.7% or so this year, the index finished January 2014 down by 3.6%!” Greenhaus wrote in a recent research note. Stocks rebounded significantly after January 2014 to hit record highs in December.
